Can I build a photo cell system and hook it up to PC Lap Counter? ANy experience with this?

I was looking at this link:

Sarends,
Yes, you can build a photo cell (aka photo resistor) system and hook it up to PC Lap Counter.

My first PC timing system was built using the Simple Photo Cell Timing System (SPTS) that your post links to. One lead from a photo cell could be wired to one of your parallel port input pins (#10, 11, 12, 13, or 15 for example), while the other lead would be wired to a parallel port ground pin (#25 for example).

HOWEVER, photo cells (photo resistors) have much slower reaction times than infrared L.E.D. detectors. Also, the same photo cells may work with one computer, but not with another due to differences in the parallel ports' pin resistances.

I have experienced much more reliablility and quicker response with Infrared L.E.D. emitters and detectors. I recommend that you use these types of devices for your lap timing.
